2024 Dream Big Book Harvest
On January 15, 2024, we joined Durham's
own Book Harvest for their annual Dream Big Book Drive & Community
Celebration. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day tradition brings together
families, businesses, neighborhoods, civic groups, and more in celebration of
Book Harvest's BIG DREAM: books for every child! Now in its 13th year, Dream
Big is inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of a world in which
every child has the chance to realize his or her full potential.
As part of our Subaru Loves Learning
initiative, we were excited to cohost this event, held again at Durham's Golden
Belt Campus. Throughout the afternoon, volunteers worked hard sorting and
packing thousands of donated books, while families enjoyed meeting Wool E.
Bull, a jump rope performance from the Bouncing Bulldogs, and a parade led by
Paperhand Puppet Intervention.
It has been extremely rewarding to
partner with and participate in a grassroots effort like Book Harvest. They
have taken the initiative to re-purpose unused or unwanted books to bring joy
and learning to children in our community. In addition to these books
bolstering children's reading skills, they also open up new worlds of adventure
and imagination, and inspire curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. We
truly enjoyed seeing so many children excited about books and reading at the
Dream Big book drive, and we can't wait to see how this even grows in the years
to come.
