A Glimpse Into the New Subaru WRX STI Type RA

Not a lot is currently known about the new Subaru WRX STI Type RA. If you try to research the production vehicle, your most relevant articles were written in early June. If you were to do a web search for the Type RA today, you would see that in late July, a special edition of the vehicle broke a Nurburgring 12.8-mile Nordschleife track…on its first attempt! So let’s jump into what we do know about this car that will show up later this year.

First, let’s start with the car that broke the Nordschleife record for a 4-door sedan. The time was 6 minutes and 57.5 seconds[1]. Richie Stanaway was the driver of the Type RA that set the new record. In comparison, the previous record holder was the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, but the Subaru WRX STI Type RA was a full 35 seconds faster[2]! The Type RA even hit 179 miles per hour on the famed Nordschleife straightaway. But this is no production vehicle…let’s just be clear about that[3]. The “actual” title of this car is the Subaru WRX Type RA NBR Special which boasts 600-hp, a seat, a steering wheel, and a shifter[4].

The “RA” in Type RA stands for Record Attempt, which is a reference to the 1989 FIA World Land Endurance Record held by a Legacy that was driven over 62,000 miles in only 18 days[5]. Seems like a fitting acronym since the Subaru Type RA NBR just set the record at Nurburgring Nordschleife. The new Type RA will come with a carbon fiber roof panel and wing, 19-inch forged BBS wheels and no spare tire…all to help save weight[6]. It carries the same engine the STI has been using (for a long time), but gets and extra 5-hp with the addition of a cold-air intake and freer-breathing pipes[7]. The Type RA gets a short throw shifter, front underspoiler, as well as upgraded dampers and struts[8]. This special edition Subaru will be limited to only 500 total! It is only fitting that each Type RA will end up with a special placard mounted on the dash with its production number on it.
