1. Savannah, Georgia. Located just on the other side of South Carolina, Savannah offers tons of things to do. Go for a walk on River Street, take a carriage ride through downtown, or if you’re into scary stories, take a ghost tour. Tybee Island is a short drive from downtown Savannah incase you want to take a swim in the ocean. Savannah is certainly your picturesque southern town. They have the best combination of old southern charm and the modern culture.
2. Wilmington, North Carolina. If you want go to the beach and don’t want to drive forever, Wilmington is your place. There were plenty of things to do in Wilmington when I took my family there two years ago. At the time I had a six and three-year-old. They loved the Fort Fisher Aquarium. They were able to see all kinds of fish, turtles, and an albino alligator. We also did a tour of the USS North Carolina. Wilmington is a great destination that’s not too far away.
3. Williamsburg, VA. A little drive to the north is Williamsburg. It may be known for being a Colonial Town, but it also has Busch Gardens. If you like roller coasters, then you will definitely like Busch Gardens. Each section of the park has at least one coaster. Personally, I think the “Griffin” was the best. You’re standing up and it “leans” you over the edge before you drop, you’ll get a huge rush. If roller coasters aren’t your thing, there are plenty of shows that go on throughout the day. We watched one in the Ireland section and it actually kept my kids attention. (Seven and five at the time.) We also spent the day at Colonial Williamsburg, but I would suggest going there in the fall when the weather cooler.
4. Raleigh, North Carolina. Yes, take a trip to your own area! Become a “tourist” for the day/weekend and see local sites. Go visit the Farmers Market on a Saturday Morning. Explore the history of North Carolina at the North Carolina Museum of History. If sports are your thing, Duke and UNC both have basketball museums. Pick a place and support your local community. You’ll learn a lot and get to know your neighbors better!
Don’t go without some form of family vacation. It’s good to get away, even if it’s only for the weekend. Just remember to make an appointment with our Service Department before you go. A quick inspection could prevent a weekend trip from being ruined.
